Menudo To Celebrate 40 Years of History
Over the last two years, reunion tours have been all the rage. With Flans’ 30 years tour, the return of Kabah, and now the 90’s pop tour; comebacks are hip and can be lucrative to those artists that have not been working for a while.
Menudo has been no stranger to reunions. In 1998, six of the thirty-two members (not counting MDO members) returned to celebrate the history of the group. These six members performed and toured until 2000. Then again between 2015 and 2016 with various different members from different eras of the group. Now, Menudo is celebrating 40 years of history and the lack of motivation and excitement is appalling.
The announcement came across the news that Menudo would be celebrating 40 years with a concert and the group’s initial line-up made me shake my head in disappointment. René Farrait (1979); Ray Reyes (1982); Rubén Gómez (1987); Ashley Ruiz (1991); Alexis Grullón (1991); Abel Talamantez (1991); Didier Hernández (1995); Daniel René (1997) and Pablo Portillo (2000) are all willing to participate. Sadly, only two members of Menudo’s prime years will be in attendance. To me, this is MDO reunion with a few Menudo guest stars. This is not a Menudo celebration, this is an abomination.
It is easy to compare Menudo’s success to a group like Timbiriche because of the amount of big headliners that continuously return for momentous occasions like Timbiriche 25 and now Timbiriche 35. These members know where they came from and embrace the group’s history and the importance of their of music in their country. Menudo is bigger than that. Menudo is bigger than all of us for pop music and yet very few of the group’s members want to celebrate this. 40 years of a legacy is something to be proud of; yet the fan base seems to be dying more and more with each year.
I think, over the years there has been so much bad blood between management and members that many are not willing to step forward any longer. Fans are left with “b-listers” who have nothing better to do with their time. There is not even a complete era of Menudo that will be present on the proposed concert. The members of Menudo have no loyalty to the brand name or the fans who have been with them since day one.
Again, comparing Menudo to Timbiriche…both Thalia and Paulina Rubio have both always embraced the history with medleys of Timbiriche hits or even duets. Thalia recent joined Sasha, Benny and Erik to release new version of the ballad, “Junto A Ti” that was from the group’s double album, Timbiriche VIII y IX. So why will Ricky Martin not record a new version of “Rayo De Luna” or “Dame Mas”? How about Draco Rosa performing “Hold Me” in concert? NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!
Until we see people like Ricky Martin, Robby Rosa, and even Sergio Gonzales come back to their Menudo roots, there isn’t much exciting news about Menudo’s 40 year celebration.
Fans are not asking for Ricky, Robby, Ray, Roy, and Charlie to get back on stage together to sing and dance to “Chicle De Amor,” though I know many of us would pay big bucks to see that happen. A walk-on for a solo, a stage appearance to talk to the fans and express their gratitude, or hell… a video message broadcasted on a jumbo tron with well wishes to the guys performing would be nice. But to totally snub the musical history and importance of a group like Menudo is a slap in the face to fans around the world.
No date is currently set for Menudo’s 40 year celebration.
